License

MGFX runtime code and shader tooling use the Lux MGFX Community License 1.1. The license is source-available and community-friendly, but it is not an open-source license and it does not permit unrestricted commercial use.

This page is a practical summary. The complete LICENSE-MGFX-COMMUNITY text controls if the summary and license differ.

Permitted Uses

  • Personal, hobby, educational, academic, research, and experimental use.
  • Community servers whose primary purpose is recreation, collaboration, or community participation rather than commercial advantage.
  • Voluntary donations, crowdfunding, and sponsorships used only for reasonable server and community operating costs, with no owner/operator profit or personal compensation.
  • Sponsor acknowledgment such as a name, logo, link, chat color, badge, or non-transferable cosmetic title, provided it grants no gameplay advantage or exclusive functional content.
  • Developing, using, modifying, publishing, and distributing plugins that every recipient can obtain and use for free.

Community-server permission depends on the conditions in sections 2 and 3 of the license. Operators must keep records reasonably sufficient to show that community support is used for permitted operating costs.

Uses Requiring Separate Authorization

  • Charging for server access, memberships, features, content, items, virtual currency, gameplay benefits, ranks, or queue priority.
  • Taking server revenue as profit, wages, fees, or other personal compensation.
  • Selling, licensing, renting, paywalling, privately delivering, maintaining, supporting, or otherwise providing a paid plugin or paid plugin service.
  • Client work, paid services, hosted or managed server offerings, advertising-supported products, and other use primarily directed toward commercial advantage or monetary compensation.

Contact the copyright holder for a separate written license before using MGFX in one of these commercial contexts.

Plugins and Redistribution

A plugin that uses only MGFX public interfaces and contains no MGFX code is not an MGFX-derived portion and may use another license. It still cannot use MGFX in connection with a paid plugin without separate authorization.

When distributing MGFX or an MGFX-derived portion, keep the license and attribution notices, mark modified files, and apply the same license to the MGFX-derived portion. Independent free plugins are not required to adopt the MGFX license.

Documentation prose uses CC BY 4.0. Documentation-site source and code examples use MIT OR Apache-2.0. Branding assets are not licensed for reuse by those licenses.
